The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences also known as
Oscars have finally released its annual list of their new members. Last
year the Oscars were brutally bashed for being all white and mostly men.
This year they have widened the horizon and this time there are a lot
of female members, international members and underrepresented
ethnic/racial communities.
This
years list includes 49% International names, 45% women and 36% from
underrepresented ethic/racial. From Bollywood Indian actors we have Alia Bhatt and Hrithik Roshan on the list. Neeta Lulla was in the costume department.
Besides these Bollywood celebs, other personalities include,
Awkwafina, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Olivia Wilde and South Korean stars
as well.
This time, 819 artists and executives from 68 countries
have been invited to join this year. If the new members accept their
invites, Academy voters will grow from 8,594 to 9,412 (total 2019
Academy membership was 9551).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Academy President David Rubin said, “The
Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travellers
in the motion picture arts and sciences. We have always embraced
extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film
community, and never more so than now.”
